Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful technique used in mental health counseling to help individuals process traumatic memories. By integrating this trauma therapy approach into their sessions, clients can experience relief from distressing symptoms that may be affecting their daily lives.
Grief and loss are integral parts of life, and once they take hold of us, their grasp can feel overwhelming. Dr. Dennis Tirch notes, 'Grief is rarely tidy and it's rarely easy to get through or get over. It shakes our core assumptions about life, death, loss, separation, and what matters.' In a safe and compassionate environment, you can receive the support you need to express your individual pain and navigate the wide range of emotions associated with loss. Through mental health counseling, including EMDR therapy and trauma therapy, you are not alone, and it's important to remember that we are not designed to grieve in isolation.
Navigating both expected and unexpected shifts in relationships, careers, and health can be exciting and challenging, triggering many emotions. Engaging in mental health counseling, including EMDR therapy and trauma therapy, can provide the support and guidance needed for self-exploration. This process helps you gain insight and understanding into yourself while releasing personal judgments and fears, ultimately revealing a powerful opportunity for deep emotional healing and personal growth.
One perspective on stress suggests that it surfaces when the mind resists, rather than accepts, what is happening in life. When we fight reality, suffering intensifies, suppressing the immune system and causing emotional distress, which, if ignored, can be harmful. Early recognition of emotional and behavioral signs of stress is crucial, as is identifying specific physiological stress signals. Techniques such as EMDR therapy, mental health counseling, and trauma therapy can help manage stress effectively, improve productivity and performance, and enhance overall well-being.
Open communication, conflict resolution, and feeling connected to self and others are crucial for healthy relationships and a well-functioning society. However, effectively expressing oneself while considering the needs of others can be challenging. Engaging in mental health counseling, including EMDR therapy and trauma therapy, can help you learn interpersonal skills to improve relations, increase social competency, and experience a deeper connection with self and others.
How do you know you have value and worth? Through mental health counseling, you can build a healthier self-image, gain confidence, and feel more secure in your own skin. In a compassionate, nonjudgmental, safe environment, learn the self-nurturing components of self-esteem, including how EMDR therapy can boost yours and help you fulfill your potential as part of effective trauma therapy.
Anger is a normal human emotion, but expressing it constructively is key to maintaining healthy relationships. Unmanaged anger can lead to negative cycles of tension, resentment, and emotional distance. By integrating techniques from EMDR therapy and mental health counseling, individuals can learn strategies for both immediately addressing anger and developing long-term emotional regulation skills, particularly in the context of trauma therapy.
After receiving my doctorate in Counselor Education from Virginia Tech in 2004, I was awarded a 5-year post-doc research fellowship in the Molecular Neuropsychiatry Branch at the National Institute On Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Baltimore, Maryland, where I examined the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with drug addiction. During this period, I also served as an adjunct professor in the Psychology Department at Towson University. My clinical experience includes providing mental health counseling in various settings, such as community-based mental health rehabilitation agencies, where I worked with children and their families both in the home and schools, as well as with non-profit agencies and providing outpatient care in community-based facilities. Drawing from my combined experience from my post-doc fellowship and my training in EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), most of my mental health experiences involve trauma therapy for individuals with a history of trauma.
As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I have a special interest in working with individuals who are striving to change their lives fundamentally. According to Dr. Gabor Maté (2022), trauma is not what happens to you but what happens inside of you. He states that when an emotional wound doesn't heal, it either remains raw or is often replaced by a thick layer of scar tissue (https://drgabormate.com/book/the-myth-of-normal).
I have been trained in EMDR therapy to help treat PTSD, sexual trauma, and other behavioral issues. EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. This therapy consists of standardized protocols that incorporate elements from various treatment approaches, and to date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.

Late Cancellation Fee: A fee of $35 will be charged if you cancel less than 24 hours before your scheduled session for EMDR therapy or mental health counseling, and the cancellation is not made via the TherapyNotes secure client portal, email, or telephone. This fee allows the therapist time to schedule another client for trauma therapy in the appointment slot.
No-Show Fee: A fee of $60 will be charged if you fail to attend your scheduled EMDR therapy or mental health counseling session without providing 24 hours' notice, especially for trauma therapy appointments.
Future Appointments: Frequent late cancellations or no-shows may also risk your ability to schedule future appointments for EMDR therapy, mental health counseling, or trauma therapy.
The client portal serves as a central communication hub for secure information exchange between CURRENT active clients and their mental health counseling providers. HIPAA mandates that all protected health information (PHI) is safeguarded, and a compliant portal for services like EMDR therapy and trauma therapy includes features such as secure login, encryption, access controls, audit trails, and automated logoff to protect this sensitive data.
Secure Telehealth Sessions: Telehealth sessions, including EMDR therapy and trauma therapy, are conducted through TherapyNotes, a secure platform that is HIPAA-compliant. HIPAA regulations mandate robust administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect electronic PHI (ePHI) during mental health counseling encounters. These safeguards encompass end-to-end encryption to prevent unauthorized access to private conversations, role-based access controls to limit PHI exposure to authorized personnel, secure data storage for client records, and the use of Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) with telehealth vendors handling PHI.
In essence, the client portal ensures that client information remains confidential and secure throughout the Telehealth experience, from communication through the portal to the actual Telehealth sessions. For mental health counseling providers, including those specializing in EMDR therapy and trauma therapy, it’s crucial to use HIPAA-compliant technology, conduct regular risk assessments, train on privacy and security policies, and maintain clear documentation to ensure ongoing compliance with the ever-evolving regulations.
